CHAPTER ELEVEN
JAMIE DIPLOMATICALLY SAID no more about the encounter as they fought their way home through Londonâs blitzed streets. Ferelith felt that he deserved some kind of explanation but first she gave herself time to marshal her thoughts. She was distressed to realise that she had remembered nothing and nobody after Jamie had written with the news of Blair. She had been looking forward with a singing heart to a hastily-arranged dinner engagement with Angus Webster. âIâm deputizing for Cameron in a lewd and libidinous,â he had said. âCan you possibly dine with me at such short notice?â And although he would definitely have understood if she had telephoned and explained or even left a message at the court, she had rushed off without a thought of anyone.
Her mind had been so full of Blair that until she had met Oliver Belanger she had forgotten everyone and everything else. Mr Belanger had been surprised and would, no doubt, tell Angus that he had seen her in London. Would he say that she had been arm in arm with a very attractive man? No, and he probably would not even mention the encounter. Angus had every right to be furious and hurt. Still, the important thing, the only point that really mattered at this precise moment in the great scheme of things, was that Blair was going to get well. She could explain to Lord Webster: she could tell him everything and if he refused to accept her apology then he would be the loser. She said this to herself very bravely but a teeny-weeny feeling inside told her that she too would be a loser if he did not retain his confidence in her integrity.
Jamie had some sausages and some powdered eggs. He also had a bottle of very good champagne.
âRather decadent, champagne and sausages, or will this become the in thing to have for a post-bombing supper?â He was joking as Jane would have done, sensing that Ferelith was still rather ill at ease in his company as well as being distressed by her meeting.
âIâm afraid Iâve rather blotted my copybook with Lord Webster of Dalmarnock,â she said. âI had a date with him and I forgot completely. Very flattering to him. Mr Belanger is perhaps his closest friend and I wouldnât like Angus, Lord Webster, to get the wrong idea.â
âIâm your cousin, Ferelith, and Blair is your brother. Your friend will understand and besides, itâs unlikely that your Mr Belanger will mention that he met you. Good friends donât do that sort of thing.â
âIt might slip out if Angus is worried.â Would he be worried? Only if she meant something to him and why should she? And here Ferelith found herself telling someone she barely knew what she had been unable to formulate for Maria or Elspeth or even Simon, who knew her better than anyone. âI quite like Angus, and we have seen one another once or twice and I had agreed to a real .â.â. date I suppose and then your letter came and all I could think of was Blair.
